Dentons Spoke at the 12th China R Conference in Beijing

The 12th China R Conference, hosted by the Capital of Statistics and co-organized by the School of Statistics and the Center for Applied Statistics and Research of the Remin University of China, was held at Remin University of China on May 24 and 26, 2019 where Zhang Jianmin, a Dentons partner, delivered a keynote speech.

With increasing adoption of big data, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence technologies, data has become a key asset to improve competitiveness of our country and businesses. But the nature of data invariably leads to huge ownership conflicts and tensions. How to promote the effective and compliant use of data and protect data assets while respecting personal rights, especially privacy rights, has become an important issue for the data industry.

Against this backdrop, Zhang Jianmin, in his speech titled "Protection of Personal Information and Data”, spoke about the legislation trends, typical cases, and the risks and rules behind the protection of personal information and enterprise data and shared views from the perspectives of both the data owner (individuals) and data operator (companies) .

In addition, 27 sub-forums were held in parallel. The “Forum on Privacy and Data Protection” held on the morning of May 25 was hosted by Zhang Jianmin. Experts from the China Internet Association Research Center, JD Digits, Southern Metropolis Daily Personal Information Protection Research Center, Beijing Haidian District People's Court and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, were invited to discuss their research findings in international trend of data governance, data governance of practices Internet companies, third party App evaluation, trials regarding personal information protection and related updates, privacy protection and processing of trusted data. Calvin Chiu, Counsel of Dentons China, gave a speech on the application of data FTA in M&A transactions.

In his speech, Mr. Chiu discussed key issues such as basic concepts and connotations related to the free use of data, legal attributes of data assets, key points of due diligence regarding data free use of data, and data risks and solutions in investment and financing. With the help of real-life investment and M&A transactions, he shared how to effectively prevent and reduce civil, administrative, and criminal risks incurred by data assets by utilizing due diligence results of free data use and setting specific clauses.

This "Privacy and Data Protection" forum has received extensive attention. Participants from more than 40 companies and research institutes, including Baihang Credit, Jingdong Digital, Baidu, Ant Financial, Youxin Finance, China UnionPay, Pengjing Digital, Yiche Holdings, Jiahe Meikang, Boda Strategy, Creative&Interactive Group, Datatang, Jiahe Haisen, China Metallurgical Research, Cinda Capital, Chengtong Fund, Guoxin Fund, Anjie Finance, Beijing News, and Nandu Big Data Research Institute, attended the sub- forum and took part in the discussions.
