A man surnamed Xiong was accused of trafficking and transporting 6,890 grams of drugs, an amount that may lead to death penalty pursuant to China’s criminal law and regulations of the Supreme Court. Xiong was once sentenced to life imprisonment for larceny.
Attorney Jiang Min from Dacheng’s Xiamen office was retained to act for Xiong at court. Jiang talked to Xiong, read through dossiers and analyzed all evidence. At the trial, Jiang argued that Xiong was just hired by someone else to transport the drugs; he did not participate in drug trafficking. Besides, the fact that the drugs had not been sold to drug takers diminished the potential social harm of the case.
The court adopted Jiang’s argument and sentenced Xiong to fifteen years’ imprisonment on account of drug transportation. Xiong was satisfied with the judgment and decided not to appeal.
