Canadian Ambassador to China Visits Headquarters of Dacheng in Beijing

On March 20,2015,Guy Saint-Jacques, Canadian ambassador to China, visited Dacheng headquarters in Beijing and met with Dacheng’s attorneys.

The meeting was hosted by Xiao Jinquan, head of the Supervising Committee of Dacheng and party secretary, and attended by Gu Shuyuan, head of Beijing office’s finance practice, Jiang Rongqing, head of the investment and M&A practice, Li Xiaofeng, head of the mining and energy resources practice, Shao Wei and Alan Huichison, Canada-based Dentons partner and Sara Zhang, staff from Dentons’ Beijing representative office.

Xiao introduced to the guest Dacheng’s internationalization strategy and told stories of how Dacheng and Dentons came together. Talking about the prospect for Chinese enterprises investing in Canada, Xiao pointed out Canada is rich in natural resources while China has a great demand for the resources; the two could supplement each other. Besides, Canada’s advanced technologies and hi-end equipment are also favored by many Chinese enterprises. He believed that after Dacheng officially combined with Dentons, the Dentons Canada office and its Chinese counterparts would work jointly on a broader and more in-depth scale.

Guy Saint-Jacques also believed that China and Canada could cooperate in many areas and supplement each other economically. He felt the advancement of rule of law in China and the rapid growth of China’s legal profession and acknowledged the important role lawyers played in China’s development of rule of law. He strongly supported the Dacheng-Dentons combination because he believed that the combination would bring more opportunities and win-win possibilities for both firms. He hoped that there would be more opportunities for him and Dacheng to exchange and enhance mutual understanding with each other in the future.

The participants all acknowledged the value of Dacheng-Dentons combination and the opportunities awaiting both parties. They also figured that a lot of work needed to be done with joint efforts, one critical aspect of which was mutual understanding and integration.

The meeting enhanced the ambassador’s understanding of Dacheng and the combination, built the bridge for clients of both Dacheng and Dentons Canada office for potential business cooperation in Canada, and also paved the way for the cooperation between Dacheng and Dentons Canada office.
