Dentons offers remote-working and relocation guidance as the local government launches the Barbados Welcome Stamp

As the complexities of the New Dynamic continue to drive change requiring employers to accommodate innovative approaches to work outside of traditional office settings, remote working has become the new trending topic. The desire for work-life balance and non-existent commutes coupled with hyper-connectivity has attributed to a growing trend in special visas and digital nomad permits.

The Barbados Welcome Stamp (BWS) is an intuitive initiative by the Barbados government which provisions for a ‘special’ remote working visa with accommodations to suit both individual and family group requirements. Dentons Barbados Immigration and Real Estate practices led by Robert Simmons and Erica Marshall-Forde respectively, are well-placed to support your temporary or permanent relocation to the island.  As your trusted advisors we will discuss your short, medium and long-term expectations to ensure that the BWS is the best option for you and your loved ones.

As a part of the guidance process our immigration team has highlighted key obligations of potential BWS permit holders. Pre-qualifying questions include:

  • Are you a non-citizen of Barbados?
  • Does your employment originate from outside of the country?
  • Will multiple family members require remote working permits?
  • Does your annual employment income meet or exceed the US$50,000 requirement?
  • Can you supply proof of valid health insurance coverage for the 12-month period?

As an applicant your income must be generated outside of Barbados and you must also agree not to  engage in employment outside of the activities declared on your application form.  We encourage you to reference our application checklist for a full overview of your considerations. Our real estate team is on-hand to provide local guidance with respects to timeshare contracts, long-term lease agreements and property purchases.

Barbados has always been viewed as a leader and innovator in the Caribbean region, with residency and investment being no exception.  After consultation we may propose that you consider the progressive and flexible Special Entry and Reside Permit (SERP) which may be better suited to your long-term personal and business investment goals.  We invite you to review our SERP Worksheet to assist you with this significant life decision.
