Monica Song, partner and chair of Dentons Canada’s Communications Law group and the Regulatory practice in Ottawa, has been named the next Broadcasting Arbitrator under the Canada Elections Act. She was appointed by the Chief Electoral Officer of Canada on the unanimous recommendation of the registered political parties represented in the House of Commons. 

The Canada Elections Act provides for the appointment of a Broadcasting Arbitrator whose duties include allocating broadcasting time made available by broadcasters and specialty services to registered political parties, notifying and issuing guidelines to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission concerning the allocation and booking of free and paid broadcasting time, and resolving disputes concerning these matters. 

Fluent in both English and French, Monica’s practice is focused on advising clients in the dynamic electronic communications sector with respect to regulatory, transactional, commercial, legislative reform, and policy matters. She is recognized as a leading lawyer in the Lexpert Special Edition: Technology, as a leading individual for Telecoms in The Legal 500 Canada Guide, and as a leading lawyer for Telecoms, Media and Broadcasting in the Chambers Canada Guide.

As part of the Broadcasting and Telecommunications Legislative Review (BTLR) expert panel to which she was appointed in 2018, she helped deliver a review of the legislative framework governing the communications sector in Canada earlier this year, entitled Canada’s Communications Future: Time to Act.
