The 9th Dentons Cup Mock Interview Contest Kicked off at China University of Political Science and Law (CUPCL)

Training of the 9th Dentons Cup Mock Interview Contest took place in the Changping campus of CUPCL

On October 29, 2018, the 9th "Dentons Cup" mock interview contest kicked off at the Law School of China University of Political Science and Law. A complementary training seminar was held on the same day at the University’s Changping Campus. Cao Yang and Qiao Lu, senior partners of Dentons Beijing office, provided mentoring to the 100 plus students in the audience.

In the seminar, Qiao Lu first gave a keynote speech on “Law of the Future and the Way of a Gentleman” through the lens of the development of artificial intelligence. Mr. Qiao shared his thoughts on what legal practitioners can do to deal with the rise of artificial intelligence in today’s commercial environment. He believes that we need to use our legal brain to take advantage of artificial intelligence, to be the leader rather than the followers of the times, and explains what he means by the “way of a gentleman”.

During live discussions, Cao Yang set himself as the example, and encourage everyone to focus on the long-term prospect when choosing a career. After becoming a lawyer, one will need to quickly identify which practice should be the direction of travels. The more specialized one is, the better foundation one can lay down at the start of the career. Mr. Cao also answered the questions students raised about the issues they encountered in their studies and life.

The lecture revolved around topics ranging from teaching of law to lawyer practice, artificial intelligence, legal thinking, and job interviews. The students learned about the significant impact of artificial intelligence, recognized the importance of having a legal perspective, connected legal theory and practice, and were given guidance on the skills and approach of taking interviews.

Since 2011, Dentons China has jointly held the 9 successful rounds of mock interview contests with the Law School of China University of Political Science and Law with more and better students applying each year. The reputable contest has been well recognized and welcomed by university teachers and students. A total of 48 candidates were chosen in the previous eight contests, all of whom had been offered a place in the firm for a paid internship. Their outstanding performance during the internship was widely praised by their mentors.
