Dentons to combine with Uganda's Largest Law Firm Kampala Associated Advocates

Proposed combination follows appointment of Africa Region CEO, uniquely positions firms to meet client needs in one of Africa's most robust economies

Washington, D.C., September 27, 2017  - Dentons, the world's largest law firm, today announced it will form a combination with Kampala Associated Advocates (KAA), an elite international law firm in Uganda with 26 lawyers, including 12 partners, which is also the largest law firm in the country.

The proposed combination would enable both firms to connect their respective talents to opportunities in Uganda, East Africa and around the world. Dentons has more than 8,500 lawyers in 158 locations in 66 countries.

If approved by the partners of both firms, the combination would further allow Dentons to pursue its Africa strategy and become a pan-African law firm that reaches more of Africa than its competitors.

"With this combination we are truly poised to become one of the leading and fastest-growing firms in Africa, it's our goal to be the first truly pan African law firm, through a blend of full firm combinations and our well known network" said Joe Andrew, Global Chairman of Dentons.

Dentons traces its presence in Africa to the establishment of a Cairo office in 1964. It also has offices in Casablanca, and South Africa.

The combination of Dentons and KAA would allow both firms to enhance their capabilities in key business sectors and practices, including Banking and Finance, Communications, Corporate, Dispute Resolution, Energy, and Infrastructure.

"This combination with yet another high-quality law firm would help confirm our reputation as not just the largest law firm in the world, but the leading law firm. We're proactively pursuing growth in developed and developing markets where our clients have needs" said Elliott Portnoy, Global CEO of Dentons.

"The proposed combination with Dentons, with its polycentric philosophy, will enable us to maintain our deep connections in the local community while embracing and building upon the attributes of the firm that helped us become one of the elite in East Africa," said KAA Managing Partner David Mpanga.

Following approval by both firms, who are expected to vote on it in the next several weeks, the proposed combination will launch later in 2017.
